### What is Turtle Mound?

##### The Timucuan Native Americans and Turtle Mound

**Turtle Mound is a large shell midden at Apollo Beach, Canaveral National Seashore** in the **Indian River Lagoon**. A shell midden is a pile of shells and other debris that was created by early humans who lived in the area. The Turtle Mound is one of the largest shell middens in the southeastern United States, and it provides a unique glimpse into the lives of the Timucuan Native Americans who lived in the area thousands of years ago.

**Turtle Mound** is one of the largest shell middens in the eastern United States. It stretching over a quarter of a mile long and rising 50 feet above the surrounding area.

The Timucuan Native Americans used the shells from the abundant seafood, like oysters and clams, in the **Indian River Lagoon** to build the mound, which is now a distinctive feature of the landscape. The Turtle Mound is a significant cultural resource and a valuable source of information about the people who lived in the area.

### The Timucua People and Their Way of Life

The Timucua were Native Americans who lived in Florida for thousands of years before European settlers arrived. They were semi-agricultural and relied heavily on the Indian River Lagoon, which provided seafood, including oysters, clams, and other shellfish. They used the Indian River Lagoons resources to sustain themselves, and the shells they discarded ended up forming the Turtle Mound.
